Letter of Concern

Hon. Premier Robert Ghiz, Hon. Minister of Health Doug Currie, Hon. Leader of the Opposition Hon. Olive Crane,

I am writing to ask that you, from your elected position in the PEI provincial government, support both the recognition of midwifery and doula care as autonomous professions and the implementation of midwifery and doula care as an insured service in PEI’s health system.

As a resident of PEI, I believe it is imperative that all families have the option to choose midwifery and doula care during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

There is no longer any argument about the safety or quality of midwifery care. It is acknowledged to be the “gold standard” for care of healthy pregnancies, mothers and babies.

It is also a more cost effective approach to healthy births for the PEI government. Midwife-attended births save the government approximately $800 per birth, and midwife attended homebirths can save up to $1200 per birth.

Except for the Atlantic provinces, the rest of Canada has in one way or another accepted midwifery. This means that as an Islander, I do not have access to the kind of excellent maternity care provided by midwives in other parts of Canada.

We need to move now to include midwifery care and doula care as an insured service in the PEI health system.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,
