BORN Meeting Jan 15th
Sherri’s House.
Attending: Tara Walsh, Hannah Terpstra, Sherri McWilliams, Susana Rutherford, Jen and Kristin Thompson, Sylvie Arsenault, and Sarah O’Brien

~Notifications and Communications; Meeting Reminders to go via Face Book and E-mail. (Note cancellations under 24 hours to go by phone)
~ Update from Joyce re Midwifery Implementation Task Force: Will request via e-mail
~Update on letter to request meeting with Minister Currie: no response
ACTION ITEM:Sherri will follow up with phone call
~Petition Update, we agreed to add a clarifying statement to the petition page. (450 signed on so far)
“In an effort to move to more a interdisciplinary model of care, and decrease the reliance on Obstetricians for routine obstetric care, the province should consider the integration of Midwives into the delivery care model, as has occurred in virtually every other province.”
Physician Human Resource Report, prepared for Department of Health and Wellness PEI, August 26 2010, prepared by the Hay Group Health Care Consulting
B.O.R.N has been lobbying the Government of PEI to Regulate and Fund Midwifery on PEI. Further to that the Canadian Association of Midwives has recommended that PEI adopt NWT style legislation that would recognize Midwives from provinces already regulated and open the door to allowing Midwives to practice on PEI.
While Doulas are not practicing medicine and do not require regulation where Midwives are regulated and funded Doulas are often attached to Midwifery practices and are included in multi-disciplinary maternity care teams attached to clinics, hospitals and private practice.
~Upcoming Plans
We moved to organize a rally for Midwifery Care outside province house on May 5th, perhaps with a morning session on the state of Midwifery in the Atlantic Provinces and an afternoon community-building event at St.Paul’s Anglican Hall if it is available. Community builder might look at events from previous Red Tent events.
ACTION ITEM:
Sylvie to look at logistics, Sherri and Sarah to look at a plan for the event. Susana to find archival material from previous Red Tents events.

P.s this in from Sylvie, we better decide and make a booking,
“I checked out a couple of venues for May 5th:
St. Paul’s Hall – 1:00 – 4:00, may be available at 11:00, but someone has it booked for the morning. Hall rental – $60.00, Kitchen – $50.00 for use of stove and/or dishes, $20.00 to make tea/coffee.
Trinity United Hall – Half day – $32.00, Full day – $48.00. No extra charge for use of kitchen, however a security charge of $9:00/ hr.
As of last week, both halls were available.”
Sylvie
ACTION ITEM: Co-Chairs to make a decision regarding venue and make a booking A.S.A.P

~ Community builders ;A motion was put forward that we use face book and e-mail to have some community builders in the form of attending a Family Skate at Cari or Swim and then meeting for hot chocolate snacks at the food area after. I believe Jen was going to pick up a date in February to give this a try.
ACTION ITEM: Jen to decide on Skating or Swim date and share
~ The next meeting will be in Summerside, Sarah will find a location “March meeting in Summerside. I contacted the Family Place today and they said that we could use their space for sure, but that a better venue might be the Community Connections building (and that it’s free, larger, and has great kitchen space). “
Cheers,
-Sarah
ACTION ITEM: Sarah to Announce location of next meeting, date prehaps by Doodle Poll?

~ Susana moved that at next meeting we appoint a secretary, if we don’t have someone committed to the role we can share it around each meeting.

Meeting Adjourned

Our online Petition Form is back up and running after being down due to a technical error, even if you have sent this before now is a great time to add your comments to the attention of our New Health Minister, Hon. Doug Currie. Let’s hope this is the year the PEI Government actually moves to bring Legislated Midwifery to PEI. Our most informed advisors have suggested that PEI adopt a North West Territories style of legislation that would allow a Midwife from any legislated province to practice here. This would allow women on PEI to have immediate access to Midwifery. In time Midwives could be hired to work in existing Health Clinics on PEI and deliver babies in Hospital, Birthing Centers or Homes. When Midwives become part of the Health Care System Doulas can be hired as attendants and to work as part of a Midwifery Team.
