Born’s Online Petition 2012

Friday, January 6th, 2012

Our online Petition Form is back up and running after being down due to a technical error, even if you have sent this before now is a great time to add your comments to the attention of our New Health Minister, Hon. Doug Currie. Let’s hope this is the year the PEI Government actually moves to bring Legislated Midwifery to PEI. Our most informed advisors have suggested that PEI adopt a North West Territories style of legislation that would allow a Midwife from any legislated province to practice here. This would allow women on PEI to have immediate access to Midwifery. In time Midwives could be hired to work in existing Health Clinics on PEI and deliver babies in Hospital, Birthing Centers or Homes. When Midwives become part of the Health Care System Doulas can be hired as attendants and to work as part of a Midwifery Team.

We are waiting on a final tally on the money raised for  Gislane Francour Foundation but I think we covered our costs on the film and raised about $500.00 for Haitian Midwives, Sylvie can give us an exact figure soon.

I spoke briefly with Sylvie, we need to have two new signing officers as Sandy :( is temorarily leaving for Toronto, and Robin has been gone awhile, I volunteered to be one and Jennifer has volunteered to be the other.

Our second order of business is we need to shuffle the executive. The positions are as follows

Chair-To co-ordinate meetings and keep the meetings rolling, to make executive decsions when needed

Past Chair- That will be  me , I’m ready to pass the baton please.

Secretary- To keep minutes of our meetings

Treasurer- To Keep our finances such as they are straight

Media Contact-

Board Members at large- If you would like to continue to be on this e-mail list please e-mail me to confirm  otherwise I will remove you so I am not sending you superflous information.

We need a plan for 2011/2012

plan A: Do nothing and wait for results of Implementation Task Force (due this fall) and election

Plan B: Plan on repeating the Walk in Spring of 2012

Plan C: Some fantasic new idea

I will post this as a note on the Face  Book page too for our new members we usually do not meet or take action over the summer months so any new business will be postponed until the fall unless there is a major issue.

Press Release: Community Event Listing: 5 KM Walk for Midwives of Haiti and “Doula!” the Film

BORN Co-Operative is organizing a day of activity in support of Midwifery and Doula Care Saturday May 28th . The first part of the day will begin at 1:30 p.m at City Cinema. Participants will take part in a Walk for Midwives of Haiti, a 5 KM sponsored walk to raise funds for the Ghislaine Francoeur Fund.

The Ghislaine Francoeur Fund was launched in 2008 by the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM) in partnership with the Canadian Foundation for Women’s Health (CFWH). Both CAM and the Canadian Foundation for Women’s Health (CFWH)

recognize that Haïti has the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the Western Hemisphere and that midwives play a vital role in the improvement of child and maternal health in that country.

Established in the name of Madame Ghislaine Francoeur, midwife and educator at the École Nationale d’Infirmieres Sages-Femmes in Port-au-Prince, Haïti, the fund’s purpose is to contribute in the reduction of maternal and infant mortality and to promote the development of midwifery care and midwifery education in Haïti.

Your generous donation will assist in capacity building projects and in projects that directly aid midwives and/or midwifery students in educational, professional and community development.

After the Walk for Midwives of Haiti, return to City Cinema where we will be showing the film Doula! at 3 p.m at City Cinema.

The film Doula! was made in the U.K where it was released last summer. The film follows three Doulas while they work with clients and attend births, the film contains footage of childbirth, which may be too graphic for some viewers. Admission to the film is by donation to BORN to offset the costs of presenting the film.

Come for a walk, or see the film or do both!  To participate in our walk please e-mail info@born-pei.ca for sponsor forms and a map.http://born-pei.ca/pledge-form-for-5km-walk/ To view our map online http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=4420869
